"probably the worst game I have ever played" 2009-10-08
By Liquid07 (Luxembourg)
I was so looking forward to this game when it came out. Having played all the Larry's during my childhood.

No matter how much you like Larry, DO NOT bother buying this game. Probably the worst game I have ever seen or played. I was quite mad at myself having wasted money buying this. I tried really hard to give this game a chance. But after only 20 min of gameplay, i had to stop and almost threw its box and disc off my balcony.

 "R.I.P Leisure Suit Larry" 2009-08-26
By Stevie G (Manchester, England)
After a troubled development, Leisure Suit Larry was never going to be a classic. But the end result is embarrassing, bearing no resemblance to the Al Lowe originals. This latest adventure sees Larry Lovage working a summer job at Laffer Studios, his Uncles film company. There's a plot afoot to ruin the business, so Larry is asked to work undercover and learn the identity of this mole. Along the way, Larry searches for action, adventure and romance.

In reality, this means frustrating fetch quests and tedious missions around the open world of Tinselwood.

Side quests include 100 Larry awards to collect, races handed out from a Stig lookalike, and Dreamscape sequences with references to film genres. There are a total of 3, Wild West, Horror & Bytanic. In addition, a seduction minigame has Larry trying to impress the employee of the moment. Their details are posted on the notice board, then Larry has to find and seduce them, which involves a fetch quest along the way. At points in the game, a director minigame provides the chance to direct a film sequence. The action plays out, while Larry chooses from three possible camera shots, with a higher score for the correct one. Shooting and fighting sections are included too. However, every one feels like a lazy, unfinished idea that amounts to no more than a button bashing exercise. More interaction is needed in the games environments too.

Mission design is frustrating and thoughtless. One requires Larry to find 11 items in 14 minutes scattered on rooftops around the map. Another mission is exactly like an earlier one, this time removing the items placed before. There are times even the games designers know its getting lazy, with Larry muttering "What a tired and contrived plot mechanic". The simple gameplay is made unbearably frustrating by a jerky camera. It's absolutely horrendous, and along with poor collision detection, makes platform sections a nightmare. Timed sections rage inducing. Graphical glitches are everywhere, with objects popping in and out of sight.

Although Box Office Bust has an 18 rating, and unlike previous games, it doesn't feature any graphic nudity. Any fans of the original will be turned off by the shift in gameplay too. Fraternising with the lay-dees was what gained this series cult status. So it's difficult to understand who this game is being made for. There are plenty of risqué references and a good deal of cleavage, but it's rarely funny.

Load times are horrendous for such a simple game. The loading screens display comments like: Button bashing counts as exercise. The game has almost done loading...almost...seriously...just wait a little longer. And, it's a little known fact your average games player spends 45 dog years waiting for loading screens to finish. They don't make it any more enjoyable.

Ironically Box Office Bust manages to alienate even its core audience. The voice talents of Joe from Family Guy (as Damone LeCoque) dont even raise a smile. It's sad as Leisure Suit Larry has the potential for a good game. But it will take a miracle now.

 "PS1 game in a PS3 suit" 2009-07-05
By Mr. S. DAVIES (East Anglia, UK)
I rented this game for a week & I'm glad I did because I would have shot myself had I wasted the money & bought it.

I like the other "Larry" games with their harmless fun but I thought they would have stepped it up a notch to use the power of the PS3 but they havn't.

It's too frustrating. There are times when you have to make the bloke jump & he should grab a ledge but if you press the button twice he will miss or just slide on the wall, or there are times when I was trying to move him on a ledge and the camera angle is no good or worse still the camera angle changes in mid jump then so does Larry and he misses and falls to his death so I have to start a 3 min timed path again for the 50th time.

Give it a go by all means but wait until it's priced like the PS1 game it is.

Report says - must try harder.

It's not a great game, packed with glitches and bearing little resemblance to the fun and laughter I've had with previous Larry games. It's ok as a bargain bin special. I had already heard it wasn't going to be great but for me Larry is a game I grew up with so just had to get it for the ps3. Has made me giggle in a couple of places but no real belly laughter of years gone by. controls are easy enough but the glitches make it rather frustrating.

     "You'll scream with frustration!" 2009-07-28
    By Conor Lynch (Cork, Ireland)
    Where to start.

You only get to play certain transformers on certain levels, you hardly get to play Optimus prime at all.

You're cannons are pointless as must enemies just shield themselves and most characters need to be hit with something, like a tree or a brick

    before they stop being invincible.

Some levels are so frustrating you'll scream, e.g.

    - Theres a level here where Megatron can be kicked around by "invincible" Autobot characters, which is just weird.

    - When you're Blackout fighting Ironhide he's hard to control, easy to kill and trips over everything.

    - Many levels are 20 minutes long and if you die you start again.

No replay value, barely any play value.

Stay miles away unless you're a hardcore Transformers fan why isn't bothered by anything.

I dont know why people give this game bad reviews tbh i think it is the most fun ive had in a game for quite a while but not as good as gta iv

this game is freeroaming allowing you to go wherever you want and basically do whatever u want.

what i found reallty fun about this game was the ability to pick up any object u like , e.g cars, the donut of the top of a building, also the ability to destroy buildings really made this game fun.

i also enjoyed how u could be a helicopter, a jetplane and many other transformers this made me get this game and i still love it.

if you want a game that you will play again and again i reccomend u get this game.

the way you climb up the building and than jump off and transform in mid-air.In Afganastan when your the helecopter thingy-abob you can blow up the planes in the air... And on the ground.

Every time my 5 year old cousin come round we allways play destroy everything in sight. so yeah its pretty fun but it would would be better if you could harm the people running about screaming like hell.

So a 4-star is the right kind of rating

 "Rubbish" 2009-07-08
By Mr. Oliver C. L. Gordon
This game is terrible. Most of the game is basically a walking sim, just following waypoints around till you get to your destination. They have managed to make this a little more tedious by forcing you to stop to wait for some smoke to go past every 15 steps. The puzzles have very little variety, and aren't very challenging: go to miniclip for some far more interesting stimulation! Due to the linearity of it I wouldn't define this as a game at all as this implies some sort of interaction: the only interaction here is you making the character move to the next video clip (and I remind you that the walking between places is a bit that is usually skipped on TV: because it's boring!). I wouldn't know how long the game is because I didn't finish it: I got too frustrated and bored with randomly dying by falling down holes in pitch black caves (whoever thought that this would be an enjoyable aspect deserves to be shot).

Im completely new to the whole gaming thing, and luckily got Lost on PS3 very cheaply, so wasnt too disappointed at how short it was! (I too completed it in a week).

If you're not very confident shooting things, dont mind some insanely frustraing puzzles - which all seem so simple once you've cracked them, and can get over the repetitive 'reminders', then it isnt terrible.

Wouldnt recommend it for serious gamers, but for PS3 widows like me it does make you feel a bit more involved!

 "Great for £7" 2009-01-24
By Mr. S. Mullins
IM basing this review having paid £7 pre owended, which is what this is worth - about 2-4 evenings entertainment.

After the first 1-2 hours, i thought this game was excellent, wondered why it was getting 1-2 stars everywhere. Then, i relised, i had played to about episode 3! so halfwau thru the game already. Really, there isnt much meat to this game, its a quickie albelt with some baffeling electronics based puzzles - which i gave up on and googled for the lost walkthru - cheating? probably, but i didnt have a clue about these puzzles and would of ended up throwing the disc thru the window!

Overall though, i think this games is ESSENTIAL if your a lost fan, it is very short, but still entertaining and plugs a hole until season 5/6... kicks off. It does feel more like a preview version or a 'lets make a few lost games to rake in some cash' version - i think the latter considering the (itzie spoiler) Stupid ending - the letters w t and f come to mind. !

By Jonathan Shread (Surrey, UK)
I didn't expect too much from this game, as I thought it would be aimed more at the Wii. However, I expected the game play and graphics to be good.

The graphics are very good, and at times you actually feel that you are watching the film. However, the game play was fairly disappointing - you can battle a foe far to easily. Once you have hit them twice, they just stand there and allow you to finish them off. However, I will say the when you battle a leader of a group (for instance Davey Jones' first mate) the finishing moves are very satisfying.

I don't understand how this game can be rated a 16+. There is now blood or swearing, just fighting. Also, this game is not as addictive as I thought it would be.

This game is not one that I would buy, but it is not a bad game on the PS3. I imagine that it would be good on the Wii.

I read the reviews watched the trailers and thought this game was a must have for the playstation 3.

Whilst the graphics and visuals are nice I felt the gameplay lacking you can get through the majority of the fights by spamming the x button, the puzzles (if thats what they were meant to be) didnt offer any challenge, you were led by the hand to every objective.

Are the graphics alone enough to warrant paying the money? NO I completed this game in an evening I found the duelling system laughable and the levels far to easy.

I asked my eldest son to play the game he completed it in about the same time and his comments were the same as mine.

When I spend this much money on a game I expect it to last me a couple of days at least but now I have a £40 disc gathering dust on the shelf as I have no desire to play it again.

Not a bad game but not a great game either. My son loves it but the graphics and gameplay is basic and nothing new. It does have multiplayer co-op which is good but it is limited in movement(like say Shrek 2 was whereby you are sharing the same screen space). It almost feels like they have basically rushed this game out pre-movie release. You play as Flint (and Steve the Monkey in 2 player) having to use various guns to erase, clear or collect various amusing food items on what is a platformer style game. The presentation is simple enough and its very basic-ness in nature can become enjoyable, tricky and challenging. Good clean kids fun with it's strongpoints being 2 player co-op, its puzzles and it's food-orientated gags and substance of ideas.

"The manhunt of a century" 2009-08-30
    By Snabel Man (Norway)
This is a great game, actionpacked and with a good portion of playability.

The reason i didnt give it a full five stars is that it has turned a little more arcade-style than the original Mercenaries.

While the turn toward the arcade-style have added some playability to some elements of the game, like when hijacking vehicles you have to make the right button-combinations at the right time, wich adds to the games playability i feel it does not suit the games style.

The High value targets(equal to the deck of 52 from mercenaries), and targets for destruction(buildings) turn up at once you get in touch with a faction. I would much more have liked it if these turned up more graduallyn along in the game.

In mercenaries 2 you have to build your team of mercenaries to get your support options up and running. This element has given me alot for the overall feeling of the game.

Overall i really like this game, good and playable, with a nice touch of dirtyold war..

The move towards a more arcade-style game has given it a little more kindergarden-touch but not enough to ruin the averall experience.

A good game, recommended for the ones who liked mercenaries1.

Anyone who has rated this game 1-2 stars you are talking pure tripe my friends!!! you's can't of played many game's on the PS3 because this is by no mean's one of the worst game's on the PS3 let alone the worst. Ok I know it boil's down to personal taste/opinions but your taking the Mick. yes the graphics are not the best in fact to be fair, even in HD they are pretty much crap compared to the majority of PS3 tittles but this game is just pure fun!! how could anyone not love and want to blow the hell out of everything you come across?!!. If your a fan of the first Mercenaries on the PS2 then you will love this one, there is a bit more depth to this game, not loads and loads but enough to get you interested. for newbies to Mercenaries....if you enjoy free roaming games where you can blow up everything and anything you come across from a motor bike to the biggest building in the game then this is for you!! there is no lack of weapons and by no means any lack of different bombs/missiles and other lovely explosives to blow whatever up. if you can get over the general graphics(which truthfully are not as bad as has been said) then you have hours of endless fun!

 "Frustrating!" 2009-11-15
By Gulfax (Glasgow)
Lair looks absolutely stunning. The cut scenes and voice acting are excellent, the in-game graphics are amazing. The plot is pretty good too. It's just a shame that attention has been lavished on the cosmetic aspects of the game, and it wasn't paid to making it enjoyable to play.

Basically, you fly a dragon around a series of landscapes, fight with other dragons, bosses and footsoldiers. It's a really fun concept. The controls are a bit different to other games as you fly by tilting the controller. It does take a while to master it, but it's worth doing, although won't suit everyone.

I really enjoyed the missions where I got to cause havoc with the opposing army - you can breathe fire on the soldiers, land on them and take them out with your claws; it's almost like the battle scenes in Lord of the Rings and very satisfying.

However, the other missions need you to do things that are a bit fiddly; for example, flying through narrow ravines avoiding spotlights. You sometimes get to sections where the game prompts you to use the controller in a different way from normal - I usually ended up flailing about, not really understanding what I was meant to be doing. I think a player should be able to use the controller in the same way through an entire game; that the developers had to include on screen prompts should maybe have indicated to them that the game wasn't as intuitive as it could have been.

Another problem was with the invisible walls on the boundary of the play area. In some missions you'll be merrily flying along and then suddenly your dragon veers off in a different direction; it's only then that you realise you've flown to the limit of where you can.

The fights between dragons were also a bit unsatisfying; trying to hit them with fireballs was fun, but sometimes you ended up fighting them up close, and I usually ended up just hitting random buttons.

Finally, I had problems with the pointer that was meant to show you what direction to head it - it really confused me at first as it always seemed to be pointing up. The map was pretty useless, which was annoying; particularly in the level where you fly around a desert and all the scenery looks the same.

There's a lot to like in Lair, and I felt annoyed that such a good concept was so limited by level designs that really didn't mesh well with the control system. It would almost have made a better film than video game.

 "Lair... Hmm." 2009-10-28
By lee (Where in the world am i!?!?)
I was just reading the reviews today and I was really suprized at the 1 star ratings and 2 star ratings. This is a really good game. The graphics are amazing and crisp even on my 16" Acoustic Solutions SD TV. The controls ARE annoying but you can easily master the controls after 30 minutes of playing.

It can just get a little repetetive but then the great dragon battles and challenging bosses swoop straight in and make it exiting!

Overall 5/5

Fun 3/5

Gameplay 4/5

Graphics 5/5

Storyline 3.5/5

By the way, this game really should get more as the graphics are crisp and you can disable six-axis in the Options tab, making the dragon more controllable.

Also, I really do think the characters/humans look realistic.

"Don't buy it new - if at all." 2009-08-25

First of all the controls do work but they are very difficult to get used to and basically get in the way of what could have been a good game. The graphics are ok and the cut-scenes excellent but there are just too many of them. Not one of my all time favourites and not worth buying new.

"Potential was there, but a few flaws..." 2009-08-14

I love dragons. I love video games. Put the two together and I am in absolute heaven.

Or so I thought.

After waiting with baited breath for the arrival of LAIR in my local game store, my bf and I brought it home and popped it into our PS3 only to find out....the controls are damned difficult.

At first I thought it was simply him having issues mastering the sixaxis controls, as I'd spent some time previously playing "Flow" where the only controls are via the controller's sixaxis sensors. But when I got my hands on the controller finally and tried it out myself it was difficult, sluggish, and overall very frustrating. So much so that I believe we tried to play this game for 2 hours between the two of us and we haven't put it back in since. It felt like a lot of money to spend on a game that was difficult to maneuver through. (As an aside we're both experienced, veteran gamers. We've had plenty of chances to sample challenging game play AND poor character controls. This game features the latter.)

The game would definitely benefit from giving the players the ability to choose between either using the sixaxis controls or going with the old standbys, your LS and RS on the game controller. WarHawk was designed this way and there has been plenty of time wasted in our house on that game because we could choose between the two.

I do want to give the game props for being visually stunning to play, as well as having a few interesting features. Being able to slam in to the enemy by jerking the sixaxis controller was, although difficult to accomplish, an interesting way to attack them. It definitely made you feel as if you were more in to the story that way. Being blown all over the practice map was irritating but did give you an idea of just how harsh the conditions were that you were dealing with in that world.

If they ever do run the rumored patch to allow you to control the dragon with the joysticks instead of the sixaxis, I will absolutely pick the game back up to play it. Running the practice course was very fun and could only be improved with greater ability to handle your mount. With that one correction I would easily restore the other two stars to this review.

 "Underrated game" 2009-08-13
By A Jeremiah (Scotland)
Had great fun with this game. Controls are different and take a little adjusting to, but work well once you get the hang of them. Nice graphics, fun levels. It may have been a little short for a full price game but it is an absolute bargain now.

Personally I'd like to see a sequel as I'm sure there is a lot more that could be done with dragons.

 "A lot of fun" 2008-08-09
By Games are my life! (NorthWales)
I havnt seen the film so i cant tell if it follows the storey closly or just goes all over the place but i can tell you the game is very easy to play and fun to get into. The controlls are simple to the point that a child will master them before the end of the 1st lvl.

The graphics are fantastic for a game based on a cartoon and the items you eed to collect are simple to see and pick up the bad guys are very well thought up but seem to be a little to easy to defeat. The sound is great too as Jack Black has voiced this perfectly.

Children will love this and adults too but us adults will tire very quickly of the same thing in diffrent locations.

Apart from that its great

 "Red Riding" 2009-11-23
By Triggerhappytel says 'do not feed the trolls' (Kent, England)
Fairy tales have been lying to us all. Popular myth and folklore would have us believe that Red Riding Hood or Sleeping Beauty were pure and innocent, when in fact FairyTale Fights proves they were murderous and borderline psychotic. It starts auspiciously; the Naked Emperor and Jack (of the Beanstalk variety), along with their friends above, are dismayed that their fame has diminished in favour of a new fairy tale star, and go on a journey to kick some arse in the hope of regaining their status as fairy tale legends and heroes of the people.

What this roughly entails is several levels of hackandslash action which fall half way between the comical stance of Grabbed by the Ghoulies and the side-scrolling action of Sega classic Golden Axe, all wrapped in a healthy dose of satire straight from the Shrek school of design. There's a certain level of sadistic charm to it all, seeing Sleeping Beauty beat her way through hordes of sinister axe men using a (surprisingly dangerous) carrot as a weapon.

The combat system feels a little unsophisticated - it uses the right analogue stick to direct attacks, but lacks precision or finesse as a result. It allows players to execute interesting-looking attacks, but at the same time is more than a little distancing from the action. The variety of enemies is quite broad, covering a fair range of the standard Fairy Tale cliches, and there are occasional bosses including the giant from Jack & The Beanstalk and the Big Bad Wolf.

You can take the game online for up to four player co-op, but unfortunately in the few days spent with this game so far I've only found two others online, and was unable to connect with either of them. Obviously it's not going to be as popular as most of the winter's big releases, but it would be a real shame the the online lobbies remain empty. As ever with co-op - particularly with friends - a lot of a game's mistakes can be forgiven when playing through together online, but I can't conclusively comment on this aspect if there's nobody to play with.

FairyTale Fights uses the Unreal Engine 3, and while it's obviously not in the same league as BioShock or Mirror's Edge, it has a pleasing and colourful art style and looks like a fairy tale premise should look. Much has been made of the coveted 'Volumetric Liquid System', which is quite funny from an artistic point of view - think the gore of Dragon Age depicted by way of crayons. There's something darkly amusingly about literally sliding through a pool of blood from mutilated enemies.

FairyTale Fights is a likeable game with a fun style and sense of humour, but it's let down by simplistic level design and undeveloped combat. The bare bones of a good hackandslash are here, and there are some nice physics and comical little touches going on, but at the end of the day the gameplay is spread a little too thin to really stand out in what is quite a crowded sub-genre.
